Staff moving forward, enhancing leadership skills

Congratulations to The Women's Place Staff Leadership Series 2021-22 cohort for completing the series in August and to members of the 2022-23 cohort on being selected for the next cohort, which begins mid-September.

This August 2022, the 300+ Staff Leadership Series (SLS) alum welcomed the 22 women of the 2021-22 SLS cohort to their ranks. After the 2021-22 cohort graduation celebration, members of the alum group joined the cohort for a networking reception to meet the new leaders and reconnect with others.

The SLS is a 12-month, experiential program hosted by The Women's Place that enhances leadership capacity and facilitates skills development to help staff become more effective, innovative and inclusive leaders. It creates a pool of potential staff leaders from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in key leadership roles.

SLS graduates are equipped with relevant skills for the following:

  • Leveraging personal strengths of self and others for effective leadership
  • Relating to people and conducting difficult conversations
  • Coaching peers and direct reports effectively using multiple techniques
  • Strategizing to successfully deal with interpersonal and environmental demands
  • Leading teams through change and crisis
  • Cultivating an inclusive environment in which diversity is valued
  • Conducting inclusive conversations, building effective teams, and solving problems

The staff listed below who have participated in the 2021-22 cohort of The Women's Place SLS are better prepared to advance and take on new leadership roles and responsibilities. Program graduates are uniquely qualified for higher education administration at Ohio State and to cultivate a more equitable environment, a culture in which all can thrive.

Members of the 2021-22 cohort had the following to say about the program:

"This was a transformational experience for me. Despite things I've accomplished, I hesitated to call myself a leader and would minimize my accomplishments. Now, I've gained confidence to know there are multiple paths to formal leadership and informal leadership is an important skill to build."

“I learned a lot more than I was expecting to learn and have truly valued the time with my fellow cohort members and from the expertise of the guest speakers.”

"I thought the whole program was outstanding! I've learned so much about myself, other participants, and women leaders at the university and beyond. I cannot thank you enough! One of the best professional development experiences ever!"

Members of the 2022-23 cohort (also listed below) have taken on this leadership challenge. These staff, who were selected through a competitive application process, are excited to begin the next year of leadership training.

Through the SLS, the university has greater access to leaders who bring diverse ideas and perspectives, enthusiasm, and ingenuity to their work environments. Please consider these trained and motivated staff, along with previous graduates, for leadership positions in your units and colleges.
