Advocates are male faculty and staff who have a record of supporting women faculty and staff. Advocates lead facilitated conversations with other men to expose them to ways of better identifying and behaving as Allies in gender equity. These groups share evidence-based knowledge, skills and strategies to effect positive personal, departmental and institutional change.
Advocates are committed to increasing their understanding of gender bias and its impact on the academic careers of women. They work to develop facilitation materials for male* faculty and staff who are interested in becoming Allies. Once vetted, an Advocate is expected to present two facilitations annually and follow up with informal meetings to discuss case studies.
Advocates also work with the Advocates & Allies Advisory Council (AAAC) composed of staff and faculty of all genders. The AAAC’s role is to advise Advocates, provide them feedback, and help them understand and remain in touch with the experience of women and underrepresented minorities in our academic climate.
*We welcome transgender and nonbinary people who feel comfortable in a setting focused on men’s transformational learning to participate as both Advocates and Allies.
Advocates with an emeritus status have learned evidence-based knowledge, skills and strategies to effect positive personal, departmental and institutional change that supports equity for women faculty and staff and have completed their terms or are no longer at the university.
