Aiming to improve your salary or work life? Knowing how to negotiate is an essential leadership skill. It can also help to challenge the gender salary gap that impacts women. Discussions are based on the AAUW Start Smart and Work Smart curriculum to assist you in determining your market value in light of your abilities, performance, and qualifications.

About the Program
AAUW Work Smart / Start Smart is designed to teach you how to negotiate for a new job, raise, or promotion. In this workshop, you’ll gain confidence in your negotiation style through facilitated discussion and role-play.

Benefits attendees will gain include:

  • A toolkit to help navigate salary negotiations for next career opportunities and how to determine your market value related to your abilities, qualifications, and expected job duties.
  • An understanding of other benefits, services, and supports that candidates can ask about during negotiation discussions when an increased salary is not possible.
  • A better understanding of the wage gaps and other equity issues facing women in the workforce and across the academy

Attendees of any gender are welcome.

If you have any questions about this program, questions about accessibility, or wish to request an accommodation, please contact womensplace@osu.edu.

The Women's Place invites male* allies to help create a more inclusive and equitable culture for women and minoritized groups at Ohio State. In this in-person workshop led by male campus leaders/Advocates, learn about gender bias and microaggressions, the skills and strategies to interrupt them, and ways to contribute to positive changes on Ohio State's campuses.

Ally workshops are part of the Advocates & Allies for Equity initiative launched by The Women's Place and partners in November 2016. This NSF, evidence-based initiative involves male leaders, or Advocates, convening to develop male Allies into a cross-campus network in support of advancing women and underrepresented faculty and staff.

This in-person workshop will take place on the central part of the Columbus campus. The exact location will be determined by the number of registrants. Details will be emailed to participants by June 3 or earlier.

Why Ally Workshops Focus on Men

To better involve men in the collective efforts towards culture change, the Advocates & Allies workshops focus on encouraging men* to take greater responsibility for interrupting everyday and structural inequities. As the primary participants in this program, male colleagues share and learn while holding each other accountable for growth. Led by and for men, these sessions aim to offer a safe and supportive space for participating in critical conversations. It’s an environment where men, often for the first time, can openly explore their questions, confusions, hopes and concerns related to diversity issues in their organizations.

If you have questions about accessibility or wish to request additional accommodations, please contact womensplace@osu.edu. Typically two weeks' notice will allow us to provide access.

*We welcome transgender and nonbinary people who feel comfortable in a setting focused on men’s transformational learning to participate as both Advocates and Allies.

The Women’s Place invites you to join us for the 4th annual virtual FORWARD symposium. This year’s theme, “THRIVE: Advancing at Every Age,” delves into the multifaceted journey of professional growth and development, catering to individuals of all generations and focusing on women in the workplace.

THRIVE: Advancing at Every Age welcomes professionals of all ages, including students, early-career professionals, mid-career changers, and seasoned experts. Whether just beginning your career journey or to redefine your path, this symposium offers knowledge, tools, and insights for challenging ageism and thriving in today's ever-changing professional landscape.

This year’s symposium will feature keynote speaker Ashton Applewhite. The author of This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism, Applewhite is a leading spokesperson for the emerging movement to raise awareness of ageism and to dismantle it. She focuses on topics such as what makes aging different for women; how the double impact of ageism and sexism affect women’s health, income, and well-being; and how competing to “stay young” digs the hole even deeper. Applewhite claims that the women’s movement taught us to claim our power; a pro-aging movement will teach us to hold onto it.

A co-founder of the Old School Anti-Ageism Clearinghouse, Applewhite has been recognized by the New York Times, the New Yorker, National Public Radio, and the American Society on Aging as an expert on ageism. She has written for Harper’s, the Guardian, and the New York Times; blogs at This Chair Rocks; and is the voice of Yo, Is This Ageist? She speaks widely at venues that have ranged from colleges and symposia to the TED main stage and the United Nations.

This free event is open to Ohio State faculty, staff, students, and community partners of all genders. Save the date and revisit this page for more details on the panels.

If you have questions about accessibility or wish to request accommodations, please contact womensplace@osu.edu. Typically, a two-week notice will allow us to provide seamless access.

The Women’s Place (TWP) hosts the Ohio State Advocates & Allies for Equity Initiative (A&A), which involves men* in the crucial work of promoting gender equity. TWP invites male staff and faculty to join as new Advocates, one of the program’s core leaders for creating positive culture change at the university.

The Advocates & Allies initiative uses two designations to refer to participants:

  • Allies – male colleagues who attend Ally workshops as participants and commit to promote gender equity
  • Advocates – male colleagues who facilitate the workshops for participants (Allies), build Ally networks, and advocate for inclusive practices in their areas of influence across the university

To date, more than 850 men have committed to being allies for building a more equitable environment at Ohio State. Advocates can help to continue growing these partnerships.

Through a workshop model supported by an NSF ADVANCE FORWARD grant, Advocates introduce male colleagues to evidence-based skills and strategies that work to remove barriers for women and other underrepresented faculty, staff and students. Advocates lead Ally sessions and encourage continual learning through periodic meetings with other Advocates. The Women’s Place asks that Advocates commit to volunteer with the program for a minimum of one year; longer term participation is always welcome.

You can become an Advocate by attending a two-part, in-person orientation hosted by The Women’s Place:

  • Thursday, October 19, Noon - 3 pm
  • Thursday, November 16, 2 - 5 pm

New Advocates should complete both parts of the training. Please register for these sessions by 5pm on Tuesday, October 17. The two sessions will take place on the central Columbus campus. Location details will be emailed to participants.

If you are interested in becoming an Advocate but have a scheduling conflict, please contact The Women's Place, womensplace@osu.edu, to express your interest.

Questions? Contact The Women's Place.
