The Faculty Women of Color in the Academy (FWCA) National Conference is a unique educational and professional development conference that provides women faculty, university administrators, post-doctoral and graduate students, and undergraduates with a forum to network, engage and learn with peers from around the country.

The Women’s Place will be sponsoring women of color faculty and postdoctoral fellows from all campuses to attend the conference. Apply for sponsorship by Friday, March 5.

The two-day conference motivates and inspires participants to meet their professional goals. Through this high-quality, participatory, inclusive and interactive event FWCA participants:

  • Gain lessons, ideas, tools, and strategies to bring back to their institutions, organizations, and communities.
  • Make new contacts and build lasting relationships.
  • Are inspired, motivated, energized, and empowered.

The two-day conference features prominent women of color scholars as keynote speakers, panelists, performers, and workshop facilitators. This year's keynote speakers are Dr. Bettina L. Love and Dr. France Córdova.

Dr. Loveis an award-winning author and associate professor of Educational Theory & Practice at the University of Georgia. She is one of the field’s most esteemed educational researchers in the areas of how anti-blackness operates in schools, Hip Hop education, and urban education.

Dr. Córdova has served as a leader in science, higher education, and government. From 1993 to 1996, she was NASA's chief scientist; at the time, she was the youngest person to hold the position and the first woman to do so. Some of her most recent roles include president of Purdue University and leader of the NSF, appointed by President Obama.

The conference also offers the 2021 Faculty Women of Color in the Academy Pre-Conference Writing Retreat on April 9, 2021.

In conjunction with the Faculty Women of Color in the Academy (FWCA) National Conference, the Pre-Conference Writing Retreat offers women of color scholars structure and strategies to help manage the challenges of writing in a safe, encouraging community within which to connect, build their network, learn, and celebrate one another's victories.

This daylong, in-person, retreat-based training teaches effective, evidence-based strategies to scholars who are struggling to write. The unique format complements FWCA’s focus on supportive, empowering professional development. The Pre-Conference Writing Retreat does not simply allow participants to make progress on their writing. It also increases their productivity and satisfaction by providing the 1) training they need to get their writing done, 2) time to practice what they learned, 3) coaching they need to hone their skills, and 4) a community to support their progress.

By the end of each retreat, you will:

  • have made significant, measurable progress on your writing project
  • understand one of the key barriers to effective writing and its impact on your particular writing process
  • understand and have implemented at least one evidence-based strategy for addressing that challenge
  • be able to integrate that strategy into your regular writing practice
  • have expanded and deepened your network of intellectual and professional support

A growing middle class is critical for the renewed prosperity of our communities and nation, yet across our communities, the middle class is fading away. In Ohio, forty-one percent of single mothers live below the poverty line, more than double the rate of households headed by single women without children and about 15 times the rate of married couples without children, the household type least likely to be poor. Working to close the gender wealth gap is essential to strengthening the well-being of women, families, and the nation as a whole.

Through a collaboration with Schmidt Futures, Ohio State is leading a community-wide effort, the Alliance for the American Dream, to find innovative, bold ideas that bolster the middle class and ensure families have equal access and opportunity to thrive by:

  • Helping to increase household incomes or reduce expenses
  • Investing in neighborhoods to boost residents
  • Growing local businesses and employee skills

This webinar will help you develop your ideas, which are due by October 1, 2019. The top five ideas will be announced in mid-October, 2019.

While all ideas are welcome, The Women's Place encourages you to bring your thoughts on closing the gender wealth gap to this webinar where the program's first round Ohio finalist team lead will answer all of your questions about the Ohio State Alliance for the American Dream process.

Contact Beth Frey with questions about the webinar or Ohio State Alliance for the American Dream program.

Closing the Gender and Racial Wealth Gap

The gender and racial wealth gap plays a fundamental role in affecting all women’s potential for economic empowerment and leadership, and has intergenerational economic impacts on the lives of girls and women. Closing the gap is integral to women’s economic security, good health, and civic and political engagement.

Join 100 community members on August 28th for a Big Table conversation on the gender and racial wealth gap in central Ohio. Aligned with The Columbus Foundation’s Big Table, and based on findings from the Assets for Equity: Building  Wealth for Women in Central Ohio report commissioned by The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio, this event will feature ten small group discussions, each one with a unique focus on topics related to the gender and racial wealth gap.

Learn about the gender and racial wealth gap and why it matters, share your voice and story, build connections with each other, learn about the partner organizations and the work they are doing, and find out how you can get involved.

NOTE: While the registration form on the YWCA website at The "More Information/Learn more" link to the left lists many locations, only the YWCA-hosted conversation will focus on the Women's Fund report and the gender and racial wealth gap in central Ohio topic. Conversations at other locations listed on the registration form will focus on different topics.

Brought to you by The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio, YWCA Columbus, United Way of Central Ohio, The Kirwan Institute, the Columbus Women’s Commission, AFCPE, Columbus City Council, National Coalition of 100 Black Women Central Ohio Chapter, the Ohio Women’s Public Policy Network, The Ohio State University: The Women’s Place and Closing the Women’s Wealth Gap.
